About Us
Vision of the Blind started as a 15-member Self-help group targeting only Persons with Visual Impairment in February 2007 in Kenya Mombasa county, Kisauni sub-county; and was registered by the Ministry of Gender and Social Development in the same year with the sole purpose of initiating income generating activities for its members. The formation was motivated by the fact that very little (if any) was being done by duty-bearers to recognize, appreciate and address the longstanding challenges that Persons with Disabilities (including Youths and women with Disabilities together with children with severe Disabilities) were facing.
The appetite for the Self-Help group kept on increasing (even among different types of Impairments) thus prompting us to bring them on board and upgraded to a Community-based Organization in order to also expand the mandate and scope of operation to District level (now County).
In realizing the magnitude of Disability exclusion at the Coast region, we transitioned to a Non-Governmental Organization of Persons with Disabilities in 2010; which was launched on the 3rd of Dec in the same year 2010 by Najib Balala, the then Minister for Tourism and Member of parliament for Mvita Constituency; together with Dr. Samuel Tororei Ng'etich, (who was a Commissioner, with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) during the UN International day of persons with disabilities.
Our programmes revolve around Advocacy and Development whereby we have been able to implement programmes aimed at promoting the socioeconomic independence of Persons with Disabilities, nurturing their potentials and also advocating for removal of barriers that prohibit them from attaining their full potentials and inhibit their real, gainful and meaningful inclusion both in public and private sectors.
